What is Eager Reader?

Eager Reader is a reading program sponsored by the PTSA to foster a love of reading in students. This is a voluntary program, although the majority of students choose to participate at some level. Students will read their way to a fun prize for their effort while celebrating the shared joy of reading.

How to Participate:

We have simplified the program this year so that all kids can participate with minimal dependencies. Students will mark their progress on the paper reading log that can remain with them through the course of the program. Alternatively, our younger readers in grades K & 1 can mark each day they read by coloring a sea creature on the tracker. The log/tracker will be sent home with students Thursday, Feb 2nd and Friday, Feb 3rd. Please look for the Eager Reader packet in your student’s folder. We will not use an online system to track minutes for Eager Reader this year.

What “Counts” as Reading:

ANY reading counts: books, magazines, graphic novels, I-Ready, audio books, electronic books, online sources and even parent read-aloud! Minutes inside the classroom do not count, as the program is designed to encourage reading on a regular basis outside of the classroom.

The Goal:

The goal of this program is to help kids build daily reading habits & encourage a LOVE of reading! We’d like our students to enjoy reading without the added pressure of meeting stringent daily minutes quota, so all students will receive a prize irrespective of the number of minutes read, as long as they read every day. We understand that life is busy, so please encourage your student to read even for just a few minutes and mark their progress on those busy days.

How can I help as a parent?

Consider establishing a consistent reading time, agreeing on an accessible place to store the reading log so your students can fill out the details as soon as reading time is over, and occasionally checking on the log to ensure it’s not misplaced. While we would love for students to manage their log independently, younger grades could benefit from some parental assistance. You can use the reading minutes guide below as a suggestion to help your student plan out their reading time:

K & 1: 15 minutes/daily

2 & 3: 20 minutes/daily

4 & 5: 30 minutes/daily.

Eager Reader Prize:

All students who complete a reading log or tracker can redeem it for a FREE book at the Book Fair, taking place at Cascade Ridge on March 1-3. Please bring your completed log to the Eager Reader table at the Fair to claim your book.

Let us know your student’s favorite book!

We’d also love for your Coyote to show us what their favorite book is by decorating a book coloring page, found in the Eager Reader packet that was sent home. Need another copy? No problem! You can find one here:Book Coloring Page

Drop your completed book in the Treasure Chest outside the front of the school starting on Monday, February 6th. We’ll display these in the school through Eager Reader and our “Dive Into a Good Book!” themed Book Fair.
