Introduction to Parent Education
My name is Alison Cathro and I wish to introduce myself as your PTSA Parent Education Liaison between the families and staff at BLMS and the Issaquah School District. I would like to begin by sharing with you my background experience both personally and professionally which has guided me into this role for the 2007-2008 school year.
For at least six years (and three children later) I have been enrolled at Bellevue Community College in ‘parent education’ allowing my children to attend the ‘learning lab’ preschool. Parents of this program are required to attend monthly meetings which often rotate through families’ homes with an instructor supplying a variety of learning material up for review and discussion. Personally, I have gained many new skills and much needed support from these evenings for my parenting tool kit.
My other passion I wish to share with our community is my work as a Registered Nurse specializing in the care of Sexual Assault Victims with Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. My patient population includes males and females over 14 years of age and I assist with pediatric cases. I have furthered my studies in Forensics with knowledge in law, evidence collection and death investigation. I wear a pager by night and promptly present to our Emergency Department when a patient reports sexual assault. I am an educator who trains and provides workshops for other Nurse Examiners in our State. I am also a Board member and guest speaker of the FEAR project (Friends Educating Against Rape): a 501 c 3 non – profit organization, creating dialog about sexual violence to students, parents, peer counselors and professionals in an empathetic, safe environment to become more supportive of victims of assault. www.fearproject.org.
My goal this year is to spread my enthusiasm for parent education opportunities within our school and District. I am available to hear about your ideas of subject matter that would interest you and enhance your parenting style. I will be happy to present feedback from your input to the ISD planning committee for future presentations. Always feel free to say ‘hello’ anytime or contact me with ideas, suggestions or your experiences while attending seminars. You will find my communication to you in publications of the BLMS newsletter or weekly bulletin and on our PTSA notice board for current topic offerings.
